Up to 8,500 athletes and officials from around 150 nations will compete in six cities for 12 days - in 18 different sports. Standards are set here - where the densest university landscape in Europe meets the most sports clubs in Germany, in one exceptionally sport-loving region.

Sign Language Interpreter (m/f/d)
 
In freelance work (fee-for-service contract) for the implementing company of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games
temporary contract from 16.07. to  27.07.2025
 
The position is based in the Legacy & Sustainability department. As a sign language interpreter, you will be responsible for translating the opening and closing ceremonies, the Ruhr Games opening and closing concerts and the finals of sporting competitions into German sign language during the event.
 
The workload per day averages around 4 hours, depending on the exact duration of the individual, different events.
 
 
We are hiring for the following locations and sports/events:
  • Berlin: Volleyball, Swimming
  • Essen: Basketball, Tennis
  • Duisburg: Beach-Volleyball, Rowing, Official Opening Ceremony, Official Closing Ceremony
  • Bochum: Atheltics, Ruhr Games Opening and Closing Concert
  • Mülheim: Badminton

Specifically, your area of responsibility will focus on the following tasks:

  • Translating events at sporting and concert events into sign language
  • Supporting visitors with hearing impairments through clear and precise communication in sign language
  • Working with the event team to ensure that all relevant information is accessible
  • Participation in preparatory meetings to coordinate and plan interpreter assignments

Ideally you have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Completed training or certification as a sign language interpreter
  • Sound knowledge of German Sign Language (DGS) 
  • Experience in interpreting at live events, especially in the fields of sport or culture
  • High level of fluency in German and English
  • Empathy and ability to respond flexibly to different situations and people
  • Familiarity with the challenges and requirements of barrier-free communication
  • Willingness to work in a team and participate in event preparations
  • Time flexibility and availability during the event days
